Cleanroom Classification Standards

The creation of a cleanroom involves classifying the space to address issues related to contaminants such as fine particles and dust, which may originate from operators, machinery, production processes, and external airborne pollutants. These contaminants can lead to problems with ongoing work, potentially affecting work efficiency and causing product damage. Therefore, cleanrooms play a critical role in preventing contamination, particularly in environments such as hospitals, medical device manufacturing facilities, pharmaceutical plants, food production factories, electronics manufacturing plants, and various laboratories. The cleanroom classes are named according to the criteria of the FED-STD-209D (Federal Standard 209D), a U.S. standard that was established in 1963. According to the FS209E standard, particles that are 0.5 micrometers or larger are measured per cubic foot of air, while ISO standards measure them per cubic meter of air. The classification of cleanroom classes shows the maximum allowable particle count according to both the FS209E and ISO standards
